Trader Joe’s savings

November 11th, 2006 by digerati

In September a new Trader Joe’s opened about two blocks from me. This is great! There are no good grocery stores near me in DC. The nearest one is in the Watergate. For some reason the produce there is always awful and its just not an inviting store. Typically I drive out to Virginia to get groceries at a much larger and cheaper Safeway. Also, the tax in DC is abnormally high on everything, so Virginia saves on that too!

Trader Joe’s hasn’t proven useful as replacing Safeway because they simply aren’t big enough to carry all the items I get. But, it is great for a number of reasons:

  • I get no exercise when I go to safeway
  • I didn’t drive (saves a few cents anyway)
  • I buy much less than otherwise. This sounds silly but I just don’t want to carry it back. If it’s heavy or awkward I won’t buy it, and if its more than about three bags full I simply won’t get it either. That means I get better food and nothing extra I didn’t plan on getting.
