List of Assets by Tax Efficiency

This is a list of types of assets you can invest in and their relative tax efficiency. The least efficient are on top. Generally you would want to place the least efficient types in your non taxable investment accounts, and then place what is left over in taxable accounts.
- High-Yield bonds
- International bonds
- Taxable domestic bonds
- Inflation-protected securities (TIPS)
- Real Estate investment trusts (REITs)
- Balanced funds
- Stock trading accounts
- Small value stocks
- Small cap stocks
- Large value stocks
- International stocks
- Large growth stocks
- Most stock index funds
- Tax-managed funds
- EE and I bonds
- Tax-exempt (municipal) bonds
