Save on your car with air!

December 16th, 2006 by digerati

Cars are expensive. I know. I am in the unfortunate position of having a car in the city (DC) and having very rare occasions to use it. That means parking, insurance, etc with little benefit. I’m glad I don’t need to commute in a car, but it’s very expensive.
There are simple ways to save money on your car costs. Today’s tip is about air.

Most gas stations have free air. (If your normal station doesn’t, odds are the one across the street does.) You should learn to check the air in your tires at least once a month.

This saves you money because under inflated tires get worse gas mileage. The stat I saw said you lose an average of 3.3% of the gas mileage. That’s not a lot in the number of gallons, but if you spend $1500 a year on gas it could save you $50. If you are apt to do it, also check the air filter about once a month. If it’s dirty brush it off well or replace it. This can save you even more.

If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself then ask the attendant. They are usually helpful. If you’re in New Jersey they probably don’t let you do it anyway (there seems to be a law akin to murder of getting out of your car at the gas station…)
