Bull or Bear Market?

February 2nd, 2007 by digerati

Wall Street Bull StatueHeard the terms “bull market” and “bear market” on TV when analysts discuss the stock market?  Wondering what it means?

A “bull” market means the stock market as a whole is performing better than average.
A “bear” market means the market as a whole is performing worse than average.
These terms are generally used to describe the cyclical periods of market performance.

Bull market makes sense, since bull’s charge ahead. Bears, um, well they also tend to charge something they attack, so the term obviously refers to teddy bears.
