This is the second part of Chapter 2 of the Never Eat Alone series at Catch a Gideon. Quotes from the book are in bold. Please share your reactions to the quotes as well as your personal experiences with these topics via comments at the bottom of the page.
Not “how can you help me?” but “how can I help you?”
In the first part of chapter 2 we covered asking for help. Asking for help means not always just helping someone else. Asking “how can i help you” is a mindset for meeting people. There’s a slight difference. This mindset means you can enter a relationship, or even a conversation later, by thinking of what you can do for someone else. That let’s you focus on their goals and strengthen the relationship by showing genuine concern for their projects and desires as well as your own.
Relationships are solidified by trust
Bottom line: it’s better to give before you receive. And never keep score. If your interactions are ruled by generosity your rewards will follow suit.
Live by the sword, die by the sword cuts both ways (pun fully intended). If you are generous when others need your or your skills or expertise, when you need skills and expertise people will help you out. On the other hand, if you are always selfish in your networking relationships, people will always be trying to take you for what they can too. And they will be justified in doing it. You define your network, so make it a good one.
