What Is Your Mission? - Ch 3 of Never Eat Alone - Part 3 of 2 (or more)

March 20th, 2007 by digerati

This is Chapter 3 of the Never Eat Alone series at Catch a Gideon. Points from Mr. Ferrazzi are in bold. I’m asking that you react to the quotes through comments. Share you reaction to each as well as your experiences in college and the real world. (Yeah that’s right, network dammit!)

Step Two: Putting goals to paper

Connect the goals to the people, places, and things that will help you get the job done. Determine the best way to reach out to the people who will help you accomplish your goals.

Connecting with others really just involves having a predetermined plan and carrying it out, whether you want to be a ninth-grade history teacher or start your own business.

Goals must be in writing. Have a conviction to put your intentions to paper. An unwritten wish is just a dream. In writing, it’s a commitment, a goal.

You’ll come back to written goals and add to and change them. If you don’t write it down (and be specific) you’ll just have a vague notion of where you want to go; and that will never get you there.
Goals must be specific, measurable, have a due date, be believable, be challenging and demanding.

If it’s not a bit of a stretch then it’s a checklist and not a goal. Push yourself and you can be all you can be (thanks Army!).

Take action!

A goal with no action isn’t worth the process. If you take the trouble to decide what you want and how you can achieve it, by all means, DO IT!

STEP THREE: Create a board of directors.

You should be assembling a group of advisors you can trust and who will keep up with your life. They don’t need daily details, but they should always be aware of your personality changes, goals, and where you are in the process. That means at least occasional phone calls, lunches, or whatever that are personal engagements. These can be people you work with, but you need to take the personal time separately from business.
