Build It Before You Need It - Ch 4 of Never Eat Alone - Part 2

March 23rd, 2007 by digerati

This is Chapter 4 of the Never Eat Alone series at Catch a Gideon. Points from Mr. Ferrazzi are in bold. I’m asking that you react to the quotes through comments. Share you reaction to each as well as your experiences in college and the real world.

Once you’ve got an established client that will provide references and create some word of mouth, you’re halfway home.

Getting the first clients is the hardest. After that, assuming you delivered, you’ll get more clients because the first few will talk about your great service/product/idea. I have found this especially true for smaller projects that make things more convenient. People will jump on that sort of service quickly if the cost is low based only on the fast that their buddy used it first.

Be constantly creating the environment and community you want for yourself, no matter what may occur.

They say you should dress for where you want to be and it applies to every aspect of life. If you know your goals, everything can be part of the path to achieving them.

Offer out knowledge and work ethic to small companies, learn about new industries. It’s easiest to reach out to those people who are at least tangentially part of your network.

You’re building trust and a client list as well as your skills and awareness of the industry. Also, you learn what industries you might want to take part in, and which you really don’t want to. This is never apparent before you experience them first hand.

But the first step has nothing to do with strangers, you should start connecting with people you do know.

If you’re always looking for the right person to start something with you’ll be looking to start something forever. Instead, contact your friends, colleagues, parents, etc. to see who they know that might get you headed in the right direction. Life’s usually easier than we make it.
