This is Chapter 11 of the Never Eat Alone series at Catch a Gideon. Points from Mr. Ferrazzi are in bold. I’m asking that you react to the quotes through comments. Share you reaction to each as well as your experiences in college and the real world.
Keep your social, conference, and event calendar full. You must work hard to remain visible and active among your ever budding network.
Keeping busy gets you exposed to the most possible things. That is a key ingredient to being successful. Making those activities social (meaning with other people) means you don’t just learn new things, but you also meet new people who can become part of your network.
When your network is set, your goals written down, you’ll find plenty of hours during the day to do what needs to be done.
When you’re organized you can just check items off the list instead of constantly trying to figure out what you need to do next.
Sometimes I’ll take a potential employee for a workout and conduct the interview over a run. Ask a few employees to share a car ride to the airport.
Sharing other aspects of your life can create closer relationships with people you are only involved with at work.
The value of a network grows in proportion to the square of its size.
Each person you meet has an existing network you gain access to by knowing that person.
If I am meeting with someone whom I don’t know that well, I might invite someone I do know just to make sure the meeting is not a waste of time. Protegees get a kick out of such meetings and it can be a great learning opportunity. It gets them face time with me, they see business in action, and I make sure our reason for the meeting gets accomplished. In most cases they end up contributing as well. Don’t underestimate young people’s ability to find creative new insights.
Experience is necessary for most jobs, but education often gives you more up-to-date theories and ideas. Young people are also more willing to take risks that those with experience may not. Combining those two can lead to the best solution.
