Follow Up or Fail - Ch 13 of Never Eat Alone

This is Chapter 13 of the Never Eat Alone series at Catch a Gideon. Points from Mr. Ferrazzi are in bold. I’m asking that you react to the quotes through comments. Share you reaction to each as well as your experiences in college and the real world. (Yeah that’s right, follow up!)
The follow up I remember best is the one I get first. Give yourself between twelve and twenty four hours after you meet someone to follow up. Cite something in particular we talked about in the conversation, shared hobby, joke, business interest.
Follow up is the key to success in any field. I make a note to remind me to drop the person another email in a month’s time, just to keep in touch. Why go to all the trouble of meeting new people if you’re not going to work on making them a part of your life?
One way to network: Clip relevent articles and send them to people in your network. This shows you’re thinking about them and the issues they are facing.
Some tips:
- Always express your gratitude
- Include an item of interest from meeting or conversation
- Reaffirm whatever commitments you both made
- Be brief and to the point
- Address the thank you note to the person by name
- Use email AND snail mail
- Timeliness is key
- Don’t wait till the holidays
- Follow up with those who were the go between for you and someone else

Never Eat Alone is one of the best networking books written, period. Buy it now and follow along as Catch a Gideon goes through each chapter of the book.

Katherine Says
Follow up with those who were the go between for you and someone else -
Unless that go between has the ability to persuade the person you want to remain in contact with or manages the main contact’s daily email/mail/life…from personal experience, it’s never a bad thing to make sure the secretary knows who you are and where you stand with their boss. The secretary is the one who determines if you’re important enough to pass that phone call on.
